Delivering Deeper, More Accurate Holes for Ballard Mining

Client: Ballard Mining
Project: Feasibility Study
Location: Western Australia
Services: Reverse Circulation (RC) Pre-collar Drilling

THE CHALLENGE

Ballard Mining was facing major challenges with ground water, resulting in wet samples and holes that couldn’t be drilled to planned depths. Tight drilling tolerances were also critical to the program, yet deviation issues meant several previously drilled holes by other contractors were falling outside the required spacing. Traditional diamond drilling was an option, but it would have significantly increased costs and time.

THE FRONTLINE APPROACH

Frontline Drilling collaborated closely with Ballard’s geology team to assess the issues and implement a practical, cost-effective solution. Through the use of restricted inner tubes and spiral-cut stabilisers, the Frontline Drilling team was able to:

  • Achieve greater control over hole deviation, keeping within tight tolerances of <1 degree of movement per 100m of depth.
  • Extend drilling depth capability despite ground water challenges.
  • Maintain sample quality for accurate analysis.

This adaptive approach showcased the technical skill and problem-solving mindset of the crew on site, supported by open communication and a strong safety culture.

THE RESULTS

The collaboration delivered measurable results for Ballard Mining:

  • 70% of previously abandoned holes were successfully drilled to target depths and beyond using restricted inner tubes.
  • Each completed hole cost one-third of what switching to diamond core drilling would have, equating to savings of around $10,000 per hole.
  • The improved deviation control meant no additional infill holes were required, keeping the drill spacing precise and consistent.
  • The project was delivered within budget and timeframe, supporting Ballard’s ability to finalise its definitive feasibility study on schedule.

THE OUTCOME

By combining technical expertise, innovative tooling, and a hands-on, collaborative approach, Frontline Drilling helped Ballard Mining overcome complex geological challenges, saving both time and money while maintaining drilling accuracy and safety.

“What we valued most from the Frontline team was their collaborative approach and producing alternative ideas, with the drive to execute the plan and achieve the best outcomes.” — Darren Sparks, Senior Geologist, Ballard Mining
